With its fresh blend of rich history and modern flair, Sterling is an inviting and warm place to call home!
Sterling, also known as "Woonkechauxit" by the Native American tribe (Nashawogg) who had first inhabited the land, was settled in 1720. Stunning apple orchards thrived on the fertile soil and thus, apple cider making became the town's first industry! The agricultural focus includes several horse farms, working apple orchards with pick- your-own options, a Christmas tree farm, and amazing goat’s cheese from Crystal Brook Farm. The local farmer’s market offers the best in organic fruits and vegetables, and some farms raise grass fed beef and free range organic chickens. The Sterling Fair, held in September, provides local farmers and residents an opportunity to exhibit their prize winning produce, baked goods, quilts, flowers, and animals. The horse and oxen pulls are a favorite exhibit.
Summer fun at Lake Waushacum includes swim lessons for the kids, yoga on the beach, family picnics, boating, and fishing. Summer concerts on the green means bring your own box supper and enjoy the music and friends. The Wachusett Greenway means hiking and biking on great trails throughout the Wachusett region. A visit to Davis Farmland Discovery Farm and Megamaze is a special pleasure, and people come from far and wide to spend the day with kids.
Winter fun means great skiing at Mt. Wachusett in Princeton, including ski lessons for the kids, ice skating on the green, cross country and snow shoeing on the Greenway. Breakfast at Meadowbrook Orchards any time of the year is a perfect way to start a weekend morning overlooking the orchards and eastern views. If the season is right, you can pick your own fruit, and they have the best blueberries and apples.
Perhaps you remember the nursery rhyme "Mary had a Little Lamb?" That little tale was based on Mary Sawyer, who, in 1814, was followed to school by a white lamb. A student who was visiting from Harvard's Divinity School wrote it for her. The original “school house” was moved from Sterling to Sudbury at the Longfellow’s Wayside Inn by Henry Ford.
Sterling is known for its excellent school system. There are two local elementary schools, and a high school (Wachusett Regional High School) located in Holden, a town close by. Wachusett Regional High School boasts a Super Bowl Championship football team. The music department has consistently won Grammy Awards for their amazing music programs! And let's not forget about the Science Seminar. This is a special school enrichment program that is supported by scientists and engineers from local companies and universities, where students develop and win national awards for their projects!
Sterling is strategically located on Interstate I90, which connects to Worcester and Leominster. Sterling residents are only two minutes away from Route 2 and the 495 belt around Boston.
